Reading Group Selections-Science Fiction
The students started to read the last selection in their group reading books today. All of the passages are science fiction based on living in different places in space. Each group discussed how science fiction mostly takes place in the future and is based on scientific evidence that life could be the way it is depicted in the book. We will be using all of the reading strategies: questioning, making connections, summarizing, and predicting as we finish the last selection in this space unit.
Understanding Fractions with Sharing Cookies
WOW! I am so very impressed with all of the students who figured out the answer to the first cookie challenge. The students were given many other problems today of how they could share a cookie with a given amount of people. The students quickly noticed that if there is not enough cookies for each person to have one whole, they should divide the cookie into the amount of people and then equally share the pieces between the people. I am very impressed with the group work and the determination each group had in figuring out the solution to each task they were given. Tomorrow, we will be looking at how number lines and fraction strips can help us understand equivalent fractions.
Energy Conversion: Building a Bike
The students have discussed in depth how we can transfer energy in order to complete a task. Most of the groups were able to start building a stationary bike that we will use to show how we can convert energy to get the bike moving.
Stone Fox
We were introduced to the character Stone Fox today during our read aloud time. Stone Fox is a Shoshone tribe member who is entering dog races in order to win money to buy back land in his tribe's homeland. The assignment notebook code for tonight is for the students to identify what they visualized as they read about Stone Fox. They should mention a character who is serious, tall, and strong. I had a wonderful day of learning! I hope you all have a great night and I look forward to another great day of learning!
