All of the students in our district have started a Growth Mindset series to help all students keep a positive mindset in the face of struggle. We have covered the first 2 units in our classroom covering Perseverance and Grit. Perseverance is when we keep trying even when a task is difficult. We watched a short clip on Ormie the pig who never gave up trying to get the delicious cookies on top of his fridge. The students also watched a video on the Gritty Bicyclist. We discussed that we must be persistent by avoiding distractions and resilient by being strong in order to be a gritty student. I have used both of these videos as examples throughout the last couple of weeks as students often times want to give up when a task is hard or when the feedback they get is asking them to make corrections. I encourage you to watch the videos attached to the post at home with your student(s).
State Reports: History Section
I am very impressed with how well each student is doing on their state reports. THe students need to be finishing their research by Thursday in order to start creating their published document that will be part of their research. I have told the students that if they are not done with their research by today, they will need to take it home for homework.
Adding and Subtracting Fractions
The students have applied their knowledge of adding and subtracting as well as their knowledge of fractions in the first 2 units of chapter 7. In chapter 7, the students will look at how we can add and subtract fractions with like denominators. The students will also work on mixed and improper fractions and how we can use these in addition and subtraction equations. Lesson 7.1 went over how we can use models to show how we add and subtract fractions. Today, the students looked at how we can represent a fraction using unit fractions. A unit fraction is a fraction that has a numerator of one and can be used to represent a part of a whole. For example, 3/8 can be represented as 1/8+1/8+1/8=3/8. This concept will help students as we progress into adding and subtracting fractions as well as converting fractions into mixed numbers.
Midwest Region
Our journey in the Midwest Region of the United States has taken us to 3 different destinations this week. The students first learned about the St. Louis Arch as the "Gateway to the West." We then traveled to Iowa and learned the three characteristics of the land that make it a great farm state. Finally, we traveled to Dodge City and learned how cowboys and meatpacking are an important part of the economy. The assignment notebook code for tonight is for the students to identify one fact they have learned so far about the Midwest Region. I hope you all have a great night and I look forward to another great day of learning!
