We continued learning about heritage in our Lead21 unit Life Stories. The students read that heritage is what is passed down to us from one generation to the next. We discussed that heritage can be the clothing we wear, the food we eat, the holidays we celebrate, and much more. Tomorrow the students will learn about dances from other cultures and how this shows the heritage of each culture.
We started going to our second grade buddies with Mrs. Stevenson's second grade class. The purpose of buddying up with the second graders is for our students to be a role model for character and learning to the second grade students. Today the students were partnered up with a second grader and helped them be "real readers." I am so very proud of how well the students did with being on task, helping the second graders understand the text, and decode words that were difficult!
The students started reading The Journey of Fallen Rock. The book is about an indian boy and his brother competing for the chief position of their tribe. The journey the brothers will take goes from the Atlantic coast to the Pacific coast. The students will be learning about character traits and the regions of the United States as we read the book together in class. The assignment notebook code for tonight is for your student to tell you one of the challenges the brothers face along their journey. The answer should be collecting a shell from the Atlantic Ocean, pulling a feather from a bald eagle in the Great Smoky Mountains, plucking a whisker from a mountain lion, gathering a pinecone from an evergreen in the Rocky Mountains, getting a pouch of water from the Colorado River at the bottom of the Grand Canyon, and finally getting a shell from the Pacific Ocean. I only expect you to write one of the challenges in the assignment notebook. I hope you have a great night!
