As I reflect on today I have one thought in my mind, "My brain hurts." We did a lot of analyzing and critical thinking today that lead to some deep and rich conversations! Unfortunately, we were not able to get to the Word of the Day; however, when we begin following our regular schedule, we will have a WOD every day.
The first hight light of the day came this morning during our read aloud Thank You, Mr. Falker by Patricia Polacco. As I told the students, Patricia Polacco is my favorite author because of the overlying theme to all of her books about making yourself a better person. The book Thank You, Mr. Falker is an autobiographical story about how Patricia was able to over come her learning struggle with dyslexia because of the help of her fifth grade teacher. Our rich conversation we had about Patricia's struggle and how her classmates negatively responded to her learning disability allowed all of us to identify with Patricia and know that we will support each other as a class. Our afternoon was filled with diving deeper into using coordinates to help us create a visual representation of time and distance. The students performed an experiment and collected data for looking at the relationship between time and distance. We then used a graph to create a visual representation of our data and analyzed the different parts of the graph. I am very impressed with the conversations that the entire class had and the understandings that came out of the conversation. We will be continue using this skill throughout the entire year. Finally, we ended the day with an challenge to move a ping-pong ball from one cup to another. The assignment notebook code for today will be a three to four word phrase your student uses to describe how their group attached the string to the cup in order to get the ping-pong ball from one cup to another. Please also ask your student to elaborate on the challenge. You are not required to write your child's elaboration in the assignment notebook, I do not want you writing a short story as the start of your weekend begins. I hope you all have a great 3 day weekend and I will see you all ready to learn on Tuesday! Please check the Photo Page at the end of the weekend as am going to try to get the pictures from this week up to view on the page. I cannot say enough how much I have enjoyed having every student in my classroom! We started getting into the academics today. The kiddos did a great job with getting their brain back into learning mode.
The students started getting paid today in Mrs. Gray Pay for bringing their assignment notebook signed. The students were also fined if they chose to go against our classroom expectations. Students will use their Mrs. Gray Pay as a way to go on field trips and pay for the quarterly incentives. Students will also have the opportunity to earn money if you write the code from the day on the bottom of their assignment notebook. The code will always be found within each day's post. The students are taking on the job of being a professional students with ease and are on their way to getting money for field trips and incentives. We started our Word of the Day (WOD), coordinate graphs, and discussed the important memories. I will be putting pictures up on the photo page once I get a checklist of all the students who are cleared for having their picture published. Tonight the students were given homework that extended our introduction into coordinate graphs. We discussed the x-axis and the y-axis, how to write a coordinate and how to label each part of each axis. The students will need complete two games of Coordinate Connect Four. The game is similar to connect four or tic-tac-to. The students will have to strategically place their coordinates in locations on the graph in order to get 4 points connected vertically, horizontally, or diagonally. Enjoy practicing their newly learned skill! Our assignment notebook code tonight: Ask your student some synonyms for today's Word of the Day. Today's WOD was critical and some synonyms we discussed in class were judgmental, immediate, necessary, and important. Write the synonym your student tells you at the bottom of their assignment notebook and they will earn an extra $10 in Mrs. Gray Pay. Wow what a great first day! We learned a lot about each other and how to be in our fourth grade class.
We discussed memories as we read Wilfrid Gordon McDonald Partridge by Mem Fox. The students then created a piece to the Time Capsule we will be storing away and opening again the last day of school. I am so very excited to teach this group of fourth graders and create many lasting memories! It was so wonderful meeting all of the students and parents who came to "Meet the Teacher" last night! I am so excited to start this school year. Please make sure you check back frequently to see what is happening in our classroom throughout the year.
