2/25/2019 NAEP assessment
Fourth-grade students at Arrowhead have been selected to take part in the NAEP assessment coming up the end of February. The purpose of this assessment is to provide a common measure of students achievement across the country. The results of the assessment are completely confidential and only reported as a fourth-grade collective, not individual students. Students have been randomly selected to take either a reading or math. Students are only tested in one subject area with some students not chosen to take the test at all. Students not chosen to take the test will be given academic instruction in their regular classroom.
Reading
This week we will focus on the theme "Liberty and Justice" while we answer the question: Who are our everyday heroes? Students will read about 4 different people who championed to make an injustice righted in their community. Our main shared reading this week is a biography on Westley Wallace. Westley fought to give all African Americans the right to vote during the Civil Rights Movement.
Math
This week will wrap up our focus on division as the students will take their summative check in on Tuesday. We will move to looking at the equivalence of fractions and how we can compare fractions during the remainder of the week. I encourage students to continue practicing their division and multiplication skills at home.
Writing
This week the students will continue with writing their animal expository essay. We will focus on adding an interesting grabber, a purposeful introduction, and a conclusion that shares the author's perspective. Our goal is to be done with the animal essay by the third week of January with the presentations starting the first 2 full weeks of February. The students will sign up for the day they will present towards the end of January. I have informed the students that they want to have their dioramas done by the first week of February at the latest.
I look forward to an exciting week of learning adventures!
