Space Movie Opportunity
The Lincoln movie was such a hit that I am providing another opportunity to watch a movie centered around the theme for our reading unit. This unit is focused on understanding our government, scientific breakthroughs, and the achievements of others. I have decided to focus more on the idea of space with two movie options. The options are The Martian and Star Wars: A New Hope. Please complete the survey link below for the movie viewing Friday, March 1st. The movie would start around 4:30 with a brief intermission to have a quick discussion during the middle of the movie.

Reading
Looking up to the "man in the moon." This week students will continue exploring the moon by looking at how we chart the phases of the moon. Our essential question for the week is: How can you explain what you see in the sky? In our readings this week, students will learn about how we understand the moon, the northern lights, and how Greek myths were created to explain what the ancient Greeks explained what they saw in the sky.
Writing
Oh my, how time flies. Unfortunately, we were not able to finish our animal writing projects last week as students needed more time to conference with each other and the teachers. I have made a hard deadline of Friday for the expository writing pieces. The students will then have an opportunity to sign up for presentations that will take place the last week of February. I appreciate all of your support at home as students work on this project.
Math
This week will finish our unit on adding and subtracting fractions. Students will look at how we regroup fractions when subtracting. I will work with students who have mastered this skill on how to look at subtracting using negative numbers instead of regrouping. I highly encourage students to work on this skill at home in preparation for the chapter 7 test on Friday.
Science
Students will research how simple machines make our lives easier in order to gain background knowledge on how to build a machine to lift a crate to their "treehouse."
Weekly Code
1. We are reading about the phases of the moon this week in reading. The code for the week is to find a chart on this week's phases of the moon and/or look at the moon each night and draw the shape of the moon.
2. As we are wrapping up our unit on adding and subtracting fractions, I challenge students to find at least 3 examples of adding and subtracting fractions in their own personal life.
As always, I LOVE being the teacher of each kiddo in our class. I look forward to another great week of learning adventures.
