Reading
Students will begin diving into the world of technology this week as they ask the essential question: How do inventions and technology affect your life? Students will begin the week by reading a historical fiction piece regarding the introduction of telephone party lines. We will continue our journey through time as we look at different perspectives on space exploration.
Math
I am so very impressed with how students are progressing with adding and subtracting fractions. The ground work students laid down at the beginning of the year with gaining a deep understanding of what it truly means to add and subtract. Students will look at how to understand fractions greater than a whole as well as fractions written as a mixed fractions. We will conclude the week with looking at how we can add and subtract these fractions, especially what we need to do when regrouping is involved.
Writing
Our animal safari will conclude this week as students will be finishing their animal reports and presenting their hard work. Students will have an opportunity to sign up for presentations that will take place later on this week. If students are not done with their report or slide presentation by Wednesday, they will be staying in for lunch recesses until these projects are finished. Our next writing piece will be writing an opinion piece regarding space exploration.
Science
Our research on energy will come to use as students continue to build pieces they will need to create a device to carry a "heavy" load up to their "treehouse." Students will have one more day of research as they gain an in-depth look at simple machines. After this research, students will use this research to build a device that will carry a box a total height of 12 inches. I always look forward to seeing the innovative creations students make during this project.
Weekly Code
1. Students will learn about how technology can impact our lives. The first part to this week's code is for the students to interview someone not in their generation regarding a major technological advance that came about when they were in elementary school.
2. The second piece of the code this week is for students to bring in a recipe that uses a mixed number. For example: 1 1/2 cups of flour. This part of the code must be brought in no later than Wednesday morning.
