Determining Theme and Understanding Folktales
Many of the stories we have read this year as a whole class has a moral or lesson at the end of the story. The students discussed this literary element, determining a theme, today in class as we started a Persian folktale. In this story, a selfish merchant keeps a parrot in a cage so the parrot can continue to attract customers. Many of the students have predicted the theme will revolve around the idea of greed because of the beginning of the story. As we read, the students are collecting pieces of text evidence to help in determining the theme of this folktale. As students read at home, you can ask them what the theme of their book is and ask them to cite evidence to support their claim.
Spelling - 2.1 prefixes
This week's spelling list focuses on adding a prefix to a root word. The students went over these prefixes at the beginning of the year with these spelling words providing a review for how to understand prefixes. Students should be practicing at least 15 minutes at home either using Spelling City or writing the words out. I have started printing out lists for students who prefer a printed version.
Music Concert
The Veteran's Day Performance will be this Thursday. Parents can watch the performance at 8:45 with a follow up performance for the student body at 10:00. Please have students come to school wearing blue jeans and a red, white, or blue shirt. Ms. Waddell has asked for girls to wear black leggings if they want to wear a skirt. The students have worked very hard on this performance and I look forward to seeing them honor the women and men who have chosen to serve our country.
Yellowstone Art Museum Visit
All Arrowhead fourth-grade students had the privilege of experiencing landscapes presented by the Yellowstone Art Museum docent Trish M. The students learned that landscapes can evoke an emotion, draw your attention to different quadrants in the landscape, and portray a poem. The assignment notebook is for the students to describe one piece they saw today and what stuck with them in the piece. I hope you all have a great night and I look forward to another great day of learning!
