We are journey through the ways different cultures have explained/discovered parts of space. Today, the students started to learn how we use technology to explain space. The students learned today that astronomers were punished for going against the accepted theory that the Earth was the center of the universe. As we know today, the sun is the center of the universe; however, before the early 1700s, it was not acceptable for people to go against the theory that the Earth was the center of the universe. Many students struggled with understanding why it would be against the law to prove a theory wrong using science. We had a great discussion regarding how people struggled with accepting a different theory even if scientists had proof.
Using the Distributive Property to Divide AKA "Partial Quotients"
Our love for division continued today as we mastered breaking apart a number in order to have tangible pieces to divide. The students used base-ten blocks, counters, and division facts to solve the assigned division problems. If students struggled, I had them think of the number in base-ten blocks and divide that into the equal groups. The students who chose this method used the iTools and base-ten blocks.
Introduction to Energy Conversions
Our second PLTW module will cover different types of energy and how energy converts from one type to another. The students were introduced to the problem for the module. The students will need to design a system that will be able to carry objects from one platform to another. We are very excited about all the energy we will learn about. The assignment notebook code for tonights is fro the students to summarize the problem for this module. I hope you all have a great night and I look forward to another great day of learning!
