Placing the First Digit in the Quotient (Long Division)
Students were introduced to the standard algorithm today during our math time. The students used the base-ten blocks to divide the dividends into the given amount of groups. We then walked through each step of the long division method to discuss the process we have learned of divide, multiply, subtract, bring down. This process has not been mastered yet; however, the students will have time in groups on Monday to gain a deeper understanding of this process. They are all doing well with division, we are just now looking at how we can record our thinking in the way traditional mathematicians have done in the past.
The students were placed in groups today to discuss what we have learned in whole group and small group reading sessions. We looked at answering the 3 guiding questions: 1.) Why do people study space? 2.) How do people from the past explain patterns in the sky? 3.) What patterns and cycles do we find in space? The students did a stellar job with sharing information they have learned and then creating a group poster that demonstrates their understanding. The assignment notebook code for tonight is for the students to identify one idea they learned from another group. I hope you all have a wonderful weekend and I look forward to another great week of learning!
