What a great day of learning! The students have really started to take on their responsibility of being a professional student and working to complete all necessary tasks in order to continue their learning.
We finished reading about Celia Cruz today. The students enjoyed learning about how Celia had to push through boundaries in order to share her music and heritage with the world. I did show the students a video of Celia singing. The video can be seen below the blog post if you would like to enjoy her salsa music.
The students learned about a non-traditional method of adding today known as Place-Value Disks and Charts. This method focuses on the actual task of adding and what is happening when we regroup using the traditional addition method. My philosophy with math is to first allow the students to understand the concept and then introduce the standard way of performing the task. We will continue with another non-traditional method tomorrow and tie these two methods into understanding the traditional addition method on Wednesday.
Our writing skills continue to be the focus on our writing time. The students are focusing on writing their paragraphs with organization and detail in mind. We have associated each part of the paragraph with the stop light colors. The assignment notebook code tonight is for the your child to tell you what the stop light colors in our writing represent. The green represents the topic and the conclusion, the yellow allows the reader to slow down with the key/star idea, and the red asks the reader to stop and pay attention to the details. I had a great day of learning and I look forward to the accomplishments tomorrow brings!
